National Locum Tenens Week is celebrated August 12-16, 2019. At Health Carousel Locum Tenens, our team is incredibly thankful for the life-changing contributions locum tenens provide on a daily basis to healthcare facilities and patients across the United States.
We have had the pleasure of speaking with many locum tenens throughout the years and would like to share some of the ways locums work makes a difference in the lives of providers and the patients they care for:
Personal Life and Flexibility: Some providers choose to work locum tenens to remain close to their family:
"My family moved because of my husband's job, and locum tenens allows me to work from anywhere. I love the flexibility and not having to be committed to something long term. After my assignment, I am going to go to a medical conference, visit family, and spend time with my 11 year old daughter," - Dr. Lambie
Others want more flexibility in their lives:
"If someone is looking for a break from full-time work and wants to explore the country while pursuing other things they enjoy, this can be a great fit," -- Dr. Hoang
"You can control your schedule. The amount of work required of a doctor these days (beyond just patient care) is immense. It's not just a 9-5 job; we are sometimes working 60-80 hours per week to meet documentation and regulatory requirements. The only way to be sure you get enough time off is to commit to short-term assignments," -- Dr. Val Jones
Professional Life: Working as a locum tenens provider is a great way to expand your skills or find a facility that is the right fit for you:
"Right now, I'm using locums positions to explore what type of government healthcare job I like the best. My goal is to take a permanent position when I find a facility I like," - Dr. Liu
"Traveling also makes you a better doctor because you're exposed to different patient populations and different healthcare environments. I have learned to be prepared to treat everything from tropical diseases to motorcycle accidents," -- Dr. Val Jones
Friendships: Despite the common misconception, working locum tenens can create lifelong friendships:
"The whole group was very welcoming and everybody was very helpful. I think part of it is my personality -- I easily connect with a variety of people, and I was able to interact and be a team player. They were hopeful I would stay so they treated me extra well. Now that my assignment is over, they have been texting me --- we formed a friendship," -- Dr. Lambie
"I've been working locum tenens positions since 2012. I had the travel bug! I enjoyed moving around California, living in nice hotels, working in new places and meeting a whole lot of new people that I still keep in touch with," - Dr. Rezai
Working with Health Carousel Locum Tenens:
At Health Carousel Locum Tenens, we strive to make everything as stress-free as possible so our locum tenens can focus on what matters most: continuing to provide exceptional patient care.
"My recruiter was always available. She was very responsive and answered any questions or concerns. It wasn't just my recruiter though; people in payroll and everyone else were very easy to communicate with and provided quick responses. I felt supported," -- Dr. Lambie
"It is important when working with an agency to have someone you can talk to directly whom you trust. You can be honest. [Terri and I] have a professional but very relatable and comfortable relationship, and it makes things so easy. Terri and I have been touching base for a long time. She knows my story. She knows about my kids. And you know with children there is a lot of stuff in addition that you need in terms of benefits. [Health Carousel Locum Tenens is] just super awesome at working with you. I enjoyed being able to negotiate, and getting positive feedback from them is so helpful. It's not just an agency where they say, 'Here's your job,' and won't talk to you later. I feel communicated with and appreciated when working with them," -- Sabrina Dvorak, NP
Again, thank you to all locum tenens providers for everything you do. We hope you have a great week!
